Bonneville Speed Week, 2016

David G. Fox

Finally, after two years without, there was land speed racing on the salt during August of 2016.

The Renault Etoile Filante (Shooting Star) was on the salt for filming in conjunction with the celebration of the 60th anniversary of its record- setting performance in 1956 (191 mph). The original 270hp gas turbine engine is no longer in the diminutive car; for current filming at least, it is powered by an electric motor.

Why use one motor when two big hemis will do. The Target 550 AA/BFS ran 350 and 376 mid-week.

Speed Demon was fast car of the meet with just one SBC. They set a record averaging 416.511 mph with the B motor (B/BFS) on Monday. Here, they are buttoning up installation of the C motor, which ran one-way at 425.489 through the last mile and topped 436 out the back on Wednesday.

Then there is the smaller of the Ferguson team's streamliners, powered by 2.1 liters of turbocharged Honda four and running times of 195 on Monday and 291 on Tuesday in F/BGS.

Sometimes, just hitting the starter motor can be a killer. Note the pieces of block from the half hemi.
